Lurking Under the Surface

December 7th, 1941

The Empire of Japan began its assualt on the Pacfic Coast of the United States.

  • Japan entered WWII in order to gain control over East Asia and the Pacific.
  • Japan had already invaded China in order to regain control of China.
  • Japan was afraid of the United States' growing power in the region.
  • Richard Sorge warned Stalin and the USSR of the coming attack.
  • Japanese Admiral Yamamoto saw a knock-out blow to the US main fleet as the only chance to defeat the US.
  • The Japanese were prepared for a third-wave ground attack, but did not execute it.
  • The waiting Japanese fleet was worried about being spotted by other aircraft carriers and decided to return home.
  • They could have advanced to all the way to Chicago.
  • Three months later, Feb 23, 1942, Japanese submarines attacked coastal targets near Santa Barbara, California
  • The Battle of Los Angeles: an anti-aircraft artillery barrage fired at two UFO's over Los Angeles. This was two days after the attack on Santa Barbara. The U.S. Office of Air Force History attributed the event to a case of 'war nerves' likely triggered by a lost weather balloon.
  • June 21, 1942, Japanese submarines fired on Fort Stevens, in Oregon, which was protecting the mouth of the Columbia River.
